United Arab Emirates onward travel

Airlines flying into the UAE routinely require a confirmed return or onward ticket leaving the country, so have one ready before check-in.

What travelers should expect

Tourist visas are issued on arrival for many nationalities. While it is not always framed as a visa condition, carriers such as Emirates require a confirmed return or onward ticket that leaves the UAE. The check happens mainly at airline check-in, where the carrier is responsible for travelers who could be refused entry.[1][2]

  • The onward ticket must leave the UAE entirely; an internal hop between UAE airports does not count.
  • UAE residents and residence-permit holders are exempt.
  • A confirmed reservation with a real airline reservation code is the cleanest way to satisfy the check at the counter.

What documents usually count

Airlines normally want a return or onward flight reservation that matches the traveler name and can be checked before boarding. A verified reservation is useful because it includes an airline reservation code and a dated itinerary.
