How to Get to Komodo Island
For most travelers, getting to Komodo Island means getting to Labuan Bajo first. Labuan Bajo is the gateway town on Flores, Indonesia, where boat trips leave for Komodo National Park. The park is remote enough that you should plan transport, park visits, and Indonesia entry documents together instead of treating it like a beach day you can improvise at the last minute.
The usual route
The normal route is international flight to Indonesia, domestic flight to Labuan Bajo, then a licensed boat trip into Komodo National Park. Many travelers connect through Bali or Jakarta, then fly onward to Labuan Bajo. From there, tours visit places such as Padar, Komodo or Rinca, pink-sand beaches, snorkeling stops, and viewpoints depending on weather, permits, and sea conditions.
Do not search only for 'Komodo Island' as if it were a single airport destination. The trip works through Labuan Bajo and the surrounding national park islands. That small distinction makes flights, hotels, and tour pickup much easier to understand.
Why the park needs planning
UNESCO describes Komodo National Park as a group of volcanic islands between Sumbawa and Flores, including Komodo, Rinca, Padar, and smaller islands. It is known for Komodo dragons, dry savanna landscapes, beaches, coral-rich waters, and strong marine biodiversity. 1 That is also why visits are managed carefully.
You should expect guide rules around wildlife. Komodo dragons are wild animals, not props. Stay with your ranger, keep your distance, do not carry loose food, and do not wander off for a photo. A good tour operator will make the park rules feel routine rather than dramatic.

Boat trips range from fast day trips to multi-day liveaboards. A day trip can work if you are short on time, but it starts early and can feel packed. A multi-day boat gives you more room for sunrise views, snorkeling, and quieter pacing, but you should look closely at safety standards, cabin conditions, toilet setup, food, and cancellation rules.
Ask what is included before you pay: park fees, ranger fees, hotel pickup, snorkeling gear, meals, water, towels, and travel insurance expectations. Komodo is not the place to pick the cheapest boat only because the photos look good. Boats, weather, currents, and operator quality matter.
