Everything You Need To Pack For Your First Vacation With Your Baby

Everything You Need To Pack For Your First Vacation With Your Baby

Packing for a vacation can be a bit of a head-scratcher, and when you’re doing the packing for a baby, it might feel like preparing for a moon landing. But fear not! This guide will walk you through everything you need to pack for your first vacation with your baby. From the essentials to those little life-savers, we’ve got you covered.

1. Clothing For Baby … And Parents!

For your baby, packing clothes is a bit like a guessing game. The weather forecast says it will be sunny? Pack a light jacket, just in case. They’re saying it will be chilly? Throw in some extra rompers. When it comes to baby outfits, the mantra is: always expect the unexpected. Remember to bring plenty of extras, too. Those cute little onesies have a knack for attracting spills and spit-ups when you least expect them.

But let’s not forget about you, the super parent! While you’re focused on packing for the baby, it’s easy to overlook your own needs. Especially if you’re a nursing mother, packing the right clothes is key, and that means including items that make your life easier when you’re out and about. Bringing a selection of breastfeeding shirts means you won’t just feel stylish and comfortable. Nursing on the go will also be a breeze.

The clever, discreet access points allow you to feed your baby without wrestling with layers of clothing. Plus, who doesn’t love a shirt that multitasks? Your future self will thank you for the convenience when you’re juggling a hungry baby and your bags in a busy airport.

2. Don’t Neglect Diapering Essentials

Navigating a diaper blowout in an unfamiliar place can seem daunting. But with the right items in your arsenal, you’ll feel like a pro. This is one area you don’t want to skimp on in your packing to save space.

Organizing diaper-changing supplies is crucial. Consider packing a separate bag or using compartments in your diaper bag to easily access what you need. It might seem like a small detail now, but when you’re changing a diaper in a tight airplane bathroom, you’ll be grateful for that little bit of planning.

3. Bring Familiar Foods For Every Eventuality

Just like at home, when you’re on vacation, your baby’s hunger won’t take a break. If you’re breastfeeding, don’t forget to pack your nursing covers, breast pump, and storage bags. Avid users of breastfeeding shirts know that these items together make the perfect nursing kit.

For the formula-feeders out there, don’t underestimate the amount you might need. Pack enough formula to cover possible delays or extended stays. Sterilizing equipment and bottles are also must-haves. And remember, while you may not have your usual kitchen setup, many hotels provide microwaves and kettles — perfect for sterilizing on the go!

If your baby has started on solids, pack their favorite baby food and snacks, along with utensils and bibs. A hungry baby is an unhappy baby, so keep those tummies full!

Your destination might not have the foods or formulas your baby is used to, so pack more rather than less on this front, even if you have to pay for an extra bag. Having to introduce your baby to a new type of food or formula while traveling can be stressful because it might induce unexpected allergies in an unfamiliar place — or they might just flat-out refuse to eat it.

4. Keep Baby’s Bedtime Routine Familiar

After a long day of exploring, providing your little one with a cozy place to rest is essential. Portable cribs or travel bassinets are a must. They not only give your baby a familiar place to sleep but also ensure their safety. Bonus points if you let your little one nap in the travel crib or bassinet for a few days before you leave so they can get used to where they’re going to be sleeping to minimize stress and crying at night.

Also, consider packing some familiar items, like a favorite blanket or a sleep sack. New environments can sometimes make it difficult for babies to settle down, and these items can provide a comforting sense of home.

5. Health And Safety Essentials

In the midst of all the excitement, it’s easy to forget about basic health and safety — but keeping your little one safe is paramount. Pack a small first-aid kit with essentials like band-aids, baby-safe insect repellent, and a digital thermometer.

Keep in mind that baby-proofing doesn’t take a vacation, either. Pack a few outlet covers and cabinet locks if you can. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Last but certainly not least — make sure you bring sunscreen! Whether you’re heading to a sunny beach or a snowy mountainside, protecting your baby’s sensitive skin is a must.

And That’s A Wrap … Or Swaddle

While packing for your baby’s first vacation might seem a little overwhelming, with a little preparation, it will be a breeze. It’s all about being prepared. Take a deep breath, get packing, and get ready to make some amazing memories with your little one. Happy travels!
